Mental Health Specialist roles give you the chance to make a real difference for individuals and families who are seeking mental health services. As a Mental Health Specialist, you may provide support during challenging moments, develop individualized care plans, and work alongside individuals and families to connect them with the resources they need.
What might your day look like?
Depending on the role, you may assess mental health needs, create treatment plans based on each person’s goals, provide ongoing treatment and support, or respond to crises. You may meet one-on-one with individuals, work with families, or lead group sessions.
Your day could also include creating safety or crisis plans and connecting people with other community resources. You may work independently while also being part of a team of mental health professionals and community partners. Experienced supervisors will provide guidance and support.
Where could you work?
No two days are exactly the same. You may work in a clinic or office, a hospital, a person’s home, a detention or juvenile facility, or another community setting. Some days may include scheduled appointments, while others may require you to respond quickly when someone is in crisis or needs immediate support.
Is this role a good fit for you?
Mental Health Specialist roles are suited to candidates with relevant behavioral health education and experience. To qualify for a Mental Health Specialist position at MCHHS, you will need a master’s degree in psychology, social work, recreational therapy, music therapy, art therapy, or a behavioral science field. You may also qualify with a bachelor’s degree in nursing or occupational therapy and a license from the State of Oregon.
All candidates must also have one year of postgraduate experience in the behavioral health field. Specific requirements are outlined in the class specifications for each position.
