Mental Health Specialist

Use your experience to help others take steps toward recovery.

Peer Support Specialist roles give you the chance to use your lived experience to support people on their own recovery journey. This role is for people who have personal experience with mental health services, recovery from substance use or problem gambling, or supporting a family member through similar experiences. What you have learned can help you connect with others, offer encouragement, and share what you’ve learned from your own experience.

What might your day look like?

Your work will focus on helping people take an active role in their recovery. You may help set recovery and wellness goals, build self-help skills, or find community resources such as healthcare, housing, transportation, education, and employment. You may also reach out to people who are having difficulty accessing services and help them find the support they need.

You will work as part of a treatment team, with guidance from a qualified clinical supervisor. Your personal experience brings an important point of view and can help people feel heard, respected, and involved in decisions about their care.

Where could you work?

Depending on the role, your work may take place in different community settings. You may meet with someone to talk through their goals, help them find needed services, or work with other professionals to make sure they have the right support they need.

Is this role a good fit for you?
